creative title, brain not working. I imagine a lot of you probably want to see an eevee/eeveelution from me and as a sort of thanks for 1000+ viewers I decided to do one. So heres a jolteon and more lightning effects lol. Commence retina burning.

Sai, around 6 hours on the final version (restarted a few times).

i love the added fluff, it always seemed to me that jolteon was too skinny XD i also really love the touch of the more rabbit-like ears instead of the stupid spiky ones jolteon has in the anime. these ones look much better. *faves*

since when was lightning yellow?

Lightning can take on pretty much any color (or simply be white), though the base is white with a color glow in the case of colored lightning. Technically speaking the color is a product of various factors including the temperate of the strike (in much the same way a very hot flame has blue near its source and becomes more red as it radiates out and cools) and environmental factors such as atmospheric and weather conditions (lightning in hail clouds tends to be blue, red in rain, yellow when there is dust in the air, and white from low humidity).

However, I think the question of plausibility of lightning color is a bit of a moot point when dealing with yellow spiky haired mutated rabbit/cat/dog/etc things that can summon thunderstorms at will.

But really, I was just going orange/yellow for unity with the color of the critter and for contrast against the blue/purple BG.

I kinda abuse layers when making lightning effects. I simply draw the lightning bolt in the shape I want with a medium saturated bright color using the crayon tool, then go back over in in the center with white (or in areas that might be brighter like corners or points of crossover). Then I make a new layer and use the airbrush tool in a more saturated version of the color to go over the lightning and set the layer to overlay/addition or whatever i find looks the best and may or may not drop the opacity of that layer. Pretty cheap really lol.

So what animal did you base this off of?

i'm not sure if this is retorical/sarcasm, but to answer anyway... jolteon. I just sort of assumed that they'd have a short stubby little tail under their butt spikes. I didn't have any animal references for this one.

I don't really try to base my interpretations on any one specific real animal, rather just try to take what the pokemon is and just run with it (unless i'm purposefully changing things, like my ho-oh or chikorita, in which case its hopefully more obvious). I might have small peices of inspiration which i compile in some cases, but i try to avoid having a pokemon be a fantastical version of some real world critter.

Pokemon are a fantastical version of a real creature. or plant, or any object in general. So i see no problem with basing them on the creatures they resemble. I only asked because i'm drawing PKMN in a realistic style for my boyfriend, and i've come into many arguments with him on which animals certain PKMN are based on. One example would be he thinks Quilava and Tyflosion are badgers. And I think they are hedgehogs, or echidnas. Cyndiquil is unmistakably a echidna, his other evolutions are more like interesting porcupines or hedgehogs. Anyway, one such argument was about the Eevee evolutions. He thought they were bunnies, or squirrels. But i showed him that they looked more like a desert fox. With the very long ears and bushy tails but small bodies and narrow short snout. I was just wondering if you had a hypothesis in which you based your own. Sorry if you thought i was being sarcastic. Just trying to get other people's opinions on the PKMN.

I just wasn't sure since it was a sort of flat comment, maybe implying i should have used a reference.

There are some pokemon that are quite obvious in their source of inspiration, especially when their name includes the source (say psyduck), and even then don't look much like it. However, for a lot I don't really feel that they're any one creature and so don't really try to figure out if its a hedgehog or a badger (rather there is a possibility for mix and match of various parts with completely different bits and exagerations that do not belong to a real animal/plant resulting in what is known as typhlosion for example). Kind of like how say a german shepard dog is a dog, and is of varrying levels of relatedness to a wolf or a husky, but is neither and is a german shepard in the end. You could look up pictures of wolves and huskies to get ideas of specific more universal traits (paw structures, teeth arrangement, general skeletal layout etc) but you must always keep in mind that you're drawing a german shepard, not a wolf, or a huskie or something inbetween and must keep its defining features in mind (like the slopped back). Thats not to say its not cool to say people MUST draw pokemon as is, messing with the designs are fun and sometimes really cool "corruptions" result. Its just sometimes really easy to get too fixated on what they might be and then loose the defining features of the pokemon which in the end, is rarely actually a real animal with a funny paint job. Thats what i feel at least.

As for jolteon and what if i was to say it reminds me of as an actual animal, I find it to feel like a combo somewhere between a cat (leg and some aspects of body), dog (somewhat in the face), fennec fox (ears) and a bunny (tail, some ear since they're kinda thin and high set unlike a fennec's wide ears).

and i totally understand that. I never was trying to make PKMN be a real animal with a funny paint job. I just strive to use base characteristics to give the creature a more real feeling. They are monsters after all. But even monsters have their real life creature bases. Werewolves, fishmen, swamp monsters, dragons, and Kappas.

Ah, I wasn't dirrecting that comment specifically at you, just sort of a generic statement. I'm sure you've seen the photomanips of animals with pokemon colors for example. And yes, you still need to have a basis in reasonable anatomy, which can often be very hard when trying to transfer pokemon to a realistic form as some of them are very... oddly shapped, though they work. As you've mentioned, all of those monsters do have real-life inspiration, but at the same time are things that are unique and are generally more than the sum of their parts, which is more what I've been trying to get at. A werewolf is more than just a wolf mixed with a man, with all sorts of various ways to imagine what it would look like. Even in the most basic combinations you'll have to manipulate the anatomy of both in ways no real reference can completely guide you in, even if the final product looks plasuable and is easily identifiable to its original components. It's these modifications and combinations that produce the "new" concepts know generically as werewolves, though their basis will be heavily influneced by wolves and humans its neither in the end.

You are completely correct in that all pokemon have some basis in real life, our imagination is often very limited by what we already know and try to place things into those pre-existing categories and its a nearly impossible thing to break out of and this inevitably shows up in design.

I'm not saying that finding a real life reference is a bad thing, its not, it's often a very good thing. Rather I'm simply saying that although something might be similar it is not the same, and should not be treated the same if you want to preserve the characteristics of that particular thing (which may not be your intention, and thats fine). In application the result is you might get a badger that looks like a typholosion rather than a typholosion that looks like a badger. A subtle but very imporatant difference depending on what you're going for.

True and i agree on several levels. But in the end i merely asked a simple question and that was if you used a reference for your Jolteon, and that was one because i use types of foxes and kitties as a base, and i wanted to know what other artists use as far as animal structures. But you already answered my question before. so thank you.
